Baby, It’s Still Cold Out There

It seems I am always talking about insulating windows this time of year.  And this year has been especially cold so the topic is always at the front of our minds.

One of the new products on the market is Hunter Douglas’ Architella shades.  These shades are cellular shades that have a cell within a cell and are very good insulators.  Dead air space creates insulation and when there are multiple cells this really increases insulation.  The R factor for this shade is well above any of the other shades.  For a light filtering shade the R factor is 6.25 and if you can use the opaque or room darkening shade it goes up to 7.18.

I resisted these shades when they first came out because I thought they would be a lot more expensive but I found out that wasn’t true.   And Hunter Douglas has made information available about getting a tax credit with these shades if properly mounted inside the window trim, so you can get some of your investment back.

Of course the added benefit is that any insulation you do at the windows to keep the cold out in the winter also works to keep the heat out in the summer.  If only I could remember how hot it was last summer, maybe that would keep me warm.
