Glass Block Windows
I am a big fan of privacy and light control when I need it. And it is easy to get privacy and light control with many types of shades that are on the market today. Many of my customers have glass blocks in their master bath over the tub area. It appears to give them privacy so they don’t need an additional shade and they like the light but……
First, there is a difference in the quality of the glass block, therefore a difference in how well you can see through the blocks. I would suggest that you – probably the female of the house – go outside at night with the male of the household standing in the bathtub, with the lights on in the bathroom, and see how much you can see of him. Many of my customers have been surprised at how visible their husbands are and therefore how visible they are to their neighbors! Perhaps a shade is necessary after all, or at the very least, you are aware of what the neighbors are seeing.
I also have customers – mostly women – who are sensitive to the light when sleeping. Light comes in this glass block from the street lights outside, the yard lights, and even from the neighbor’s lights. One of my customers has a bathroom across from her neighbor’s bathroom so when the neighbor gets up at 4:00 a.m. to get ready for work and turns on her light, it makes a lot of light in my customer’s bathroom/bedroom area. We are putting a room darkening shade in this window to give my customer a light-less good sleep. Certainly this is also a good insulating shade and can be raised when you do want the light in the day time.
Don’t assume what the neighbors can see. Check it out for yourself!
