Will Your Color Scheme Be Out of Date?
I had a customer ask today if the colors she was looking for in her home would be out of date quickly. My answer to her is that anything she chooses today will be out of date eventually. But I assume what she really wants to know is if it will be out of date soon.
That is a hard question to answer. Color selection is very personal and although one wants to be up-to-date, if you don’t like blues, then the spa and chocolate brown trends we see now will not please you even if it is popular.
What I suggest is you set your color scheme – perhaps based upon a favorite vase or a favorite painting/poster you acquired or a sofa that you fell in love with. Then you decorate that room, coordinating everything in a short amount of time. That might take a year or so but don’t let it take several years because you run the risk of not being able to match your colors as the years progress.
For example, if you used the spa color today in valances and wanted to add another spa accent in pillows, the spa color today might have more blue in it, but it could evolve to more green added to the color in several years. It is still called spa, but it might not match.
So instead of adding a sofa to one room and new window treatments to another, add the sofa and window treatments to the same room before you move on to the next room/project. That will ensure all your colors will coordinate, your room will look up-to-date, and you will feel satisfied with the result.
