Window Fashions from Ho-Hum to Spectacular

Clearly window fashions are key in the overall design of a room.  Of course that is my bias because I not only love fabrics but I enjoy creating new designs for the window.  But I had a customer comment yesterday that her husband has become a believer too.  We installed a custom valance earlier this summer and they had to take it back down to repair the window.  The difference without anything framing the view was stark.  His comment was “I can’t believe we went so long without anything at the window.”  They were delighted to have the window repair finished so they could put their valance back up.  They both could see that the room went from ho-hum to spectacular.

The window is a very important feature in the room.  It determines the placement of the furniture in the room, provides access to a view that could be enhanced or shuttered, and becomes the focal point in the room with beautiful window fashions.  Some customers might want light control for sleeping late, sun control to keep the glare off the television or computer screen, added energy efficiency with layers, or just a beautiful accent on the wall.

Layering is best for energy efficiency just like we layer our clothing in the winter.  Start with blinds or shades for controlling the light or the privacy.  If the window is small, you can add panels set wider than the frame to make the window appear larger and to allow the full light of the window to come into the room.

If there is no valance, you must consider the hardware.  Adding an iron or wood pole with fabulous finials can finish the treatment.  The pole can be elaborate or simple in keeping with the style of the room and treatment.  If the panels will be stationary, you could consider a butterfly pleat or a euro pleat perhaps with a button detail.

If you want a more formal look you could add swags and jabots while a more modern look might include boxed pleats or tabs.  This is a great place to get creative and make a one of a kind window treatment.  Adding trim will enhance the treatment.  You can use a gorgeous fabric with a simple, but elegant trim or you could use a simple silk fabric and add a tassel or beaded trim that incorporates many of the colors of your color scheme.  Or you could use a gorgeous fabric AND an elegant trim!  Each to his own…
