Sun Control with Solar Shades

In Kansas we need to control the sun from the heat it creates and from the UV rays that fade our furniture, our fabrics, our flooring and our art work.  And we often place sun control shades inside our home, as well as on our porches or even on our decks.  Actually sun control is the number one reason customers seek out shades.

Most customers choose screen shades to get insulation from the sun while still getting some view and privacy.  All of these factors are attainable by varying the openness of the screen shade.

Light Screen Shades

Openness is a factor to consider.  The screen shades are rated as a percentage of openness which indicates how tightly the yarns are woven.    The tighter the yarns are woven the more sun and light control you have but the less view you get through the screen shade. Usually the openness is between 0% and 14%, 14% being easy to see through while still giving you some sun control and 0% giving absolute privacy and excellent sun control.

Many home owners choose a 3% or 5% openness – good sun control and a reasonable view. If you want a better view and don’t need quite the sun control, you could choose 10% openness.

Dark Screen Shades

A second factor to consider is the color of the shade cloth.  The lighter colors reflect more heat.  But since more light goes through a lighter color, it has a higher glare factor.  The darker colors absorb more light reducing the glare and gives you great viewing through the cloth.  It can be a tradeoff – heat reduction verses clearer view.   Often we choose the middle ground in color and openness to give you the best of both worlds.

The third factor is privacy.  The only absolute privacy is with the 0% openness.  If you chose a 3% or a 5% openness so you can see outside during the day, that is how well you can see inside at night when the lights are on.  This often isn’t a problem with the location of the shades, but it should be considered if you wanted these shades in a sleeping or dressing room.

Often customers want to keep the heat out of their home but still not feel closed off from the outside world.  These sun screen shades are just the solution!
